What to expect in the Hill Country

The Texas Hill Country is known for granite domes, limestone canyons, clear streams and scenic overlooks. Many of the best hikes are in state parks and natural areas, so rules, fees and reservations matter as much as the trail itself.

Distances here are approximate. Confirm current conditions with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) before you go.

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area

A huge pink granite dome rises roughly 400 feet above the surrounding land and gives 360-degree views. The Summit Trail is short, often cited at roughly one to 1.5 miles out and back, but it is steep on bare rock, so wear shoes with good grip. The Loop Trail circles the base for around four and a half miles and is quieter than the summit.

Reservations are strongly recommended and sometimes required, and the park may close when crowded. Rock surfaces can be slippery after rain, and trails on the dome may close for safety. Check TPWD before driving.

Lost Maples State Natural Area

Known for limestone canyons, clear streams and fall color from bigtooth maples. The East Trail loop is a moderate hike of roughly 4.5 miles that climbs to a plateau and passes a grotto. The West Trail covers more rugged canyon terrain over a shorter distance. Fall color usually peaks around late October to November, which draws crowds, so go on a weekday if you can and reserve ahead.

Garner State Park

Limestone bluffs above the Frio River make this a popular summer and family destination. Old Baldy is a short, steep, rocky climb to a view over the river valley. Combine it with a swim or picnic. Summer weekends are busy.

Pedernales Falls State Park

Layered limestone along the Pedernales River gives this park its character. Trails range from short walks to the river overlook to longer routes through the backcountry. Flash flooding is a real concern here, so watch the weather, stay off rocks near rising water and heed posted warnings.

Hamilton Pool Preserve

A collapsed grotto with a waterfall and a pool, reached by a short trail. Reservations are typically required, and swimming access may be restricted, so check the county’s current notices.

Government Canyon State Natural Area

Near San Antonio, this natural area offers rocky trails through dry canyons and hills. It is a good option when you want longer mileage. Check seasonal closures and bring plenty of water.

Best time to go

Spring brings wildflowers, including bluebonnets in many years, though timing varies. Fall is excellent for hiking and for foliage at Lost Maples; see our fall season activities for more ideas. Summer heat is intense, so hike at dawn or dusk. Winter can be pleasant, though freezing mornings occur.

Planning and safety

  • Heat: carry more water than you think you need and know the signs of heat illness.
  • Reservations: popular parks often require day-use reservations. Book early.
  • Flash floods: low-water crossings and canyon streams can rise quickly after rain upstream.
  • Wildlife and plants: watch for snakes, cactus and poison ivy.
  • Footing: granite and limestone can be slick when wet or dusty.
